EA Sports College Football
"The greatest game day atmosphere in sports gaming."
Overview
The EA Sports College Football series began in 1993 as Bill Walsh College Football on the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. After a few name changes, College Football USA in 1995 and then NCAA Football 98 once EA secured the NCAA license, the series became a staple for football fans who preferred the pageantry and chaos of the college game over the NFL's polish. For two decades, players could take their favorite school through a season, chase a national championship, and experience traditions like the Florida State tomahawk chop or the Ohio State dotting of the 'i'.
The series hit a wall in 2013. Lawsuits over the use of player likenesses, led by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon, pushed the NCAA to not renew its licensing deal with EA. Then three major conferences, the SEC, Big Ten, and Pac-12, pulled their trademark licenses, effectively killing the series. After an 11-year hiatus, EA announced in February 2021 that College Football would return. The revival, EA Sports College Football 25, launched on July 19, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It sold over 5 million units in its first week and became the best-selling sports game in US history, according to Circana.
The 2024 revival runs on EA's Frostbite Engine and uses the SAPIEN character technology for more fluid player movement and physics. The game includes over 11,000 real college athletes who opted into a Name, Image, and Likeness program, receiving a minimum of $600 and a free copy of the game. Dynasty Mode and Road to Glory return, while College Ultimate Team (CUT) makes its debut in the series. The game also supports online dynasties with up to 32 players and local multiplayer for up to four.
Gameplay
At its core, EA Sports College Football plays like a college-flavored version of Madden NFL, but with key differences that make it its own beast. The option offense is a major part of the game, zone reads, triple options, and pitch plays are more effective than in the pro game because college defenses are less disciplined. The hurry-up offense lets you snap the ball quickly without huddling, wearing down the defense over a drive. The game also simulates the BCS and later the College Football Playoff system to determine a national champion, complete with bowl game tie-ins and rankings that update weekly.
Dynasty Mode is the heart of the series. You take control of a program, recruit high school prospects by visiting their schools and building relationships, manage your team's academic and disciplinary standing, and play through multiple seasons. Recruiting is a deep minigame where you allocate points to targets, host them for official visits, and try to sway them from other schools. The 2024 revival added the Transfer Portal, letting you poach players from other programs or lose your own. Road to Glory lets you create a single player, a quarterback, running back, or wide receiver, and guide him through his college career, balancing on-field performance with academic obligations and social media presence.
Presentation is a huge selling point. Each of the 134 FBS schools has its own fight song, mascot, stadium traditions, and entrance sequences. Texas A&M's 12th Man, Wisconsin's Jump Around, and Virginia Tech's Enter Sandman are all recreated in detail. The game also features authentic uniforms, helmet stickers, and field art. The 2024 game runs at 60 frames per second on current-gen consoles, with dynamic weather and time-of-day effects that change gameplay, like rain making the ball slippery and wind affecting passes.
Story
There's no scripted plot. The story is whatever you make it. You might take a one-star program like Georgia State and turn it into a national champion over five seasons, or you could guide a five-star recruit at Alabama to a Heisman Trophy and a CFP title. The drama comes from the rivalries, playing Michigan as Ohio State, or Alabama as Auburn, and the stakes of each game. A single loss can knock you out of playoff contention, so every Saturday matters.
The 2024 revival's Road to Glory mode gives your created player a backstory: you choose a high school recruit type (like a dual-threat QB or a speed back), and you have to maintain your GPA, avoid trouble off the field, and perform on it. Your decisions in interviews and on social media affect your draft stock and your team's morale. The ultimate goal is to make it to the NFL draft, but the journey is full of setbacks, injuries, tough losses, and transfer rumors.
