Dragon's Dogma
"A bold experiment in action role-playing where you climb the impossible."
Overview
Dragon's Dogma dropped in May 2012 as a bold experiment from Capcom, blending real-time action with deep role-playing mechanics. Players step into the boots of the Arisen, a human destined to battle the dragon Grigori across the sun-drenched, Sicily-inspired realm of Gransys. The journey quickly expands beyond a simple monster hunt, revealing a web of conspiracies that challenge the very nature of destiny.
Combat stands out for its physicality; fighters grapple and climb massive foes like lizards scaling a wall, turning every boss fight into a vertical puzzle. You lead up to three AI companions called Pawns who offer advice and aid in battle. This asynchronous multiplayer system lets players share their own Pawns with strangers or recruit those left behind by others in a global Bazaar.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around the Pawn system and physics-based combat. You create a main character and hire up to three AI-controlled Pawns to accompany you on your quest. One Pawn is created by you while the other two are recruited from the online Bazaar, a hub where players leave recommendations and items for future travelers. These companions provide tactical advice and heal during battles but cannot be directly controlled.
Fighting involves grappling onto enemies and climbing their bodies to strike weak points. A giant dragon becomes a vertical battlefield where positioning matters more than button mashing. The game features over 14 distinct vocations or classes ranging from Warrior and Mage to Strider and Mystic Knight. Campfires allow you to switch between these roles instantly, enabling hybrid builds tailored to specific challenges.
Story
The narrative begins when a mysterious dragon awakens the player character from death, marking them as the Arisen. Their initial goal is straightforward: slay the Great Dragon Grigori before it destroys the kingdom of Gransys. As they travel through diverse landscapes inspired by Southern Europe, they uncover secrets about gods, demons, and the cyclical nature of time.
Characters like the merchant Darius and the sorcerer Orm reveal layers of conspiracy surrounding the dragon's return. The story questions whether fate is fixed or if the Arisen can break the cycle of destruction. Each playthrough reveals new dialogue options and plot threads based on choices made during interactions with non-player characters.
