    Overview

Los Angeles has become a quarantined nightmare fifteen years after the initial zombie outbreak. Players step into the shoes of one of six unique Slayers, each with their own backstory and combat style, as they navigate a city divided into ten distinct zones like Hell's Kitchen and Beverly Hills. The narrative unfolds through exploration and interactions with survivors, focusing on uncovering the truth behind the infection while trying to survive the undead hordes.

The game distinguishes itself with a visceral combat system built around procedural dismemberment. Every weapon creates specific wounds; a machete slices while a baseball bat smashes, making every encounter feel dynamic and gory. This brutal approach extends to the use of improvised melee weapons, firearms, and explosives against waves of enemies.

Development took a winding path before reaching players in February 2023. After being announced in 2014 under Techland, the project shifted to Yager Development and later Sumo Digital before Deep Silver Dambuster Studios finalized the build. Despite mixed reviews regarding its story pacing, the title achieved commercial success, selling over three million copies by May 2024 and earning a nomination for Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2023.

    Gameplay

Combat centers on visceral melee encounters where weapons cause unique damage types based on their design. A chainsaw tears flesh while a katana slices cleanly, creating a fluid and bloody experience that rewards creative weapon usage. Players can combine these tools with firearms and explosives to manage large groups of infected enemies effectively.

The world structure breaks Los Angeles into ten interconnected zones rather than one seamless map. Travel happens via fast travel points or by moving on foot between areas like Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Each of the six playable characters offers different skill trees and attributes, allowing for specialized builds focused on stealth, agility, or brute strength.

Online play supports up to four players working together to complete missions and share loot. Cross-play functionality allows friends on different platforms to team up, though availability varies by platform updates. The game also includes a variety of challenges and difficulty modes introduced through post-launch content packs.

    Story

Slayer Alex is found wandering the streets of a quarantined Los Angeles with no memory of the last few days. As she regains her memories, she learns that a deadly virus turned the population into ravenous undead creatures. Her journey takes her through iconic locations like the Hollywood sign and Rodeo Drive, where she must fight off hordes while searching for a cure or an escape route.

The narrative explores the lives of other survivors who have formed various factions within the city. These characters provide context for the chaos and offer quests that reveal more about the origin of the outbreak. Dialogue choices and interactions shape how the player experiences the story, adding depth to the survival scenario.

Cinematic cutscenes bridge the gaps between gameplay segments, delivering key plot points and character moments. While some critics noted pacing issues, the dialogue and visual storytelling generally received praise for being more engaging than previous entries in the series.
