"Survive the forest that never sleeps"

2017 Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia Acid Wizard Studio
    Community

    Overview

Acid Wizard Studio crafted a tense survival horror experience where players navigate a claustrophobic forest trapped in an undefined Soviet Bloc territory. Released initially through Steam Early Access in July 2014, the title reached its full version on August 17, 2017 for Linux, macOS, and Windows before expanding to consoles via Crunching Koalas. The game arrived on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One in May 2019, followed by Stadia support in September 2021 and next-gen consoles in late 2022. Hooded Horse later acquired publishing rights for the PC edition in 2025.

Players control survivors from a top-down perspective, managing resources during daylight hours while preparing for terrifying nights. The gameplay loop demands careful scavenging and fortification of hideouts against relentless supernatural threats that emerge when the sun sets. This approachable yet punishing design fits squarely within the action-adventure and survival horror genres, earning praise for its unique atmosphere rather than relying on jump scares. A sequel currently sits in development with Ice-Pick Lodge handling production under the original team's supervision.

    Gameplay

The core loop splits time into roughly 9.5-minute days and nights. During daylight, you roam a sprawling forest to find wood, nails, food, and weapons. The map layout shifts slightly each run, forcing you to learn new paths and resource locations. You must return to one of three hidden safe houses before dark hits. At nightfall, you spend gathered materials reinforcing walls, setting traps, and boarding windows to survive waves of creatures that pound at your door.

Combat is dangerous and often futile. Guns are loud, attract more enemies, and run out of ammo quickly. Stealth and avoidance work better than direct fights. The game offers no health bar or damage numbers, so you gauge your status by character animations and sound cues. Environmental storytelling reveals the plot through notes found in abandoned buildings and strange occurrences in the woods.

    Story

A group of strangers wakes up in a dense forest surrounded by an impenetrable barrier. They have no memory of how they got there or who they were. As they explore, they discover a dystopian society collapsing under the weight of a cult known as the Church of the Sun. Strange experiments conducted by the local authorities unleashed eldritch horrors that now hunt the survivors.

The narrative unfolds through fragmented logs and environmental details scattered across the map. Players piece together the history of the region, which resembles a vague Eastern Bloc state. The story explores themes of paranoia and isolation as the boundary between reality and nightmare blurs. Different choices lead to different endings, but all versions share a grim tone where escape feels impossible.
