Crossy Road
"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
Score
4.7/10
Overview
Crossy Road is an endless arcade hopper that tasks players with guiding a pixelated chicken across an infinite series of busy highways, rushing rivers, and treacherous train tracks. The core objective is deceptively simple: keep hopping forward without getting squashed by vehicles, drowning in water, or hit by trains. Each successful crossing earns points, and the game ends immediately upon making one wrong move. The game has been widely described as an endless runner version of the 1981 classic Frogger.
Gameplay is controlled through simple one-touch or swipe interactions: tapping the screen makes the character hop forward, while swiping left, right, or backward moves the character in those directions. The game features procedurally generated environments, ensuring no two play sessions are identical. Characters are purely cosmetic and share identical movement characteristics, no character is faster or jumps higher than any other, though some change the aesthetic of the landscape when used.
Crossy Road was developed and published for iOS by Hipster Whale, an Australian indie game studio based in Melbourne. The Android version was originally published by Yodo1 on December 23, 2014, but in June 2017, Hipster Whale took over direct publishing for the Android version. The core development team was small, with the game being developed in just 12 weeks as an experiment in free-to-play game design.
The game's design philosophy, emphasizing simplicity, accessibility, and low friction, has been studied extensively by game developers. Its success demonstrated the viability of a monetization model based on deferential, light-handed advertising without energy mechanics or time gates. The game's ad implementation serves as a case study in mobile ad monetization, featuring video ads that are only randomly made available and never interrupt core gameplay.
Gameplay
Players control a chicken that automatically hops forward each time they tap the screen. Swiping left, right, or backward moves the chicken in those directions. The game presents an endless series of lanes: roads with cars and trucks, rivers with logs and lily pads, train tracks with speeding trains, and grassy medians. The chicken must cross each lane without being hit. The game ends instantly upon collision or falling into water. Coins appear randomly and are collected by hopping over them. These coins can be spent in a gumball machine to unlock new characters, which are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay. The game has no energy system or time gates, allowing unlimited play. A free gift of coins is awarded at increasing intervals. Players can watch optional video ads to earn bonus coins or continue after death.
