Core Keeper
"Dig deep, build up, and survive the underground."
Score
85.0/10
Overview
Players awaken as a nameless Keeper in a vast, procedurally generated cavern system where survival depends on mining resources, crafting tools, and defending against hostile creatures. The game blends mechanics from titles like Minecraft, Terraria, and Stardew Valley into a cohesive loop focused on subterranean exploration and base expansion. Players can cultivate crops, automate production chains, and construct sprawling bases while navigating distinct biomes that shift from surface gardens to dangerous deep caves.
Pugstorm released the title into Steam Early Access on March 8, 2022, where it sold over one million copies before its full launch on August 27, 2024. The studio followed this with console releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2024. A version optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 arrived on January 26, 2026, provided as a free upgrade to existing owners. Critics praised the polished experience upon release, awarding it an 85 out of 100 score on Metacritic.
Gameplay
The core loop requires players to gather materials from the environment to craft weapons, armor, and building blocks while managing hunger and health. Automation systems allow users to set up farms and resource processing lines that run independently once configured. The world features multiple vertical layers, each containing unique enemies, bosses, and environmental hazards that scale in difficulty the deeper one travels.
Cooperative play supports up to eight participants on a single server, allowing friends to share inventory, tackle boss encounters together, and construct large communal structures. Cross-platform functionality enables seamless interaction between PC users and console owners regardless of their specific hardware. Recent updates have introduced new biomes and expanded farming options without altering the fundamental progression path established during early access.
Story
Characters begin with no memory of their past, tasked solely with restoring the world's core while uncovering fragments of lore hidden within ancient ruins. The narrative unfolds through environmental details, item descriptions, and the context of boss battles rather than traditional cutscenes or dialogue trees. This approach hints at a forgotten civilization and a looming threat to the planet without forcing a linear plot structure on the player.
Major story beats emerge naturally as players defeat specific bosses who guard key areas of the map. Each victory reveals more about the history of the world and the nature of the Keeper's purpose. The lack of scripted events allows the story to remain flexible depending on how much time a player spends exploring versus focusing on combat.
