Command & Conquer
"The war for Tiberium begins."
Overview
Westwood Studios launched Command & Conquer in 1995 to redefine real-time strategy gaming. Players managed resources and built bases while watching cinematic full-motion video cutscenes that featured Hollywood actors like Dennis Hopper and James Earl Jones. This blend of tactical gameplay and movie-quality storytelling set a new standard for the industry.
The franchise split into two distinct timelines shortly after its debut. The original series focused on an alien invasion where humanity fought over a crystalline substance called Tiberium between the Global Defense Force and the Brotherhood of Nod. Meanwhile, the Red Alert sub-series took place in an alternate history where Albert Einstein traveled back in time to stop Adolf Hitler, leading to a conflict between the Allies and the Soviet Union.
Electronic Arts acquired Westwood Studios in 1998 before closing the studio in 2003. Development moved to various internal and external teams including Danger Close Games and Petroglyph Games. Despite the original studio's closure, the community kept the games alive through mods and unofficial servers like CnCNet.
Gameplay
Players gather resources to construct bases and produce military units in real-time battles. The core loop involves building power plants, refineries, and barracks while managing a tech tree to unlock advanced capabilities. The original titles used isometric graphics with pre-rendered backgrounds, while later entries like Tiberian Sun introduced fully 3D environments.
Factions define the experience with unique units and playstyles. GDI focuses on balanced technology and defensive structures, whereas Nod utilizes stealth tactics and guerrilla warfare. The Red Alert line swapped sci-fi elements for historical fantasy, pitting the Allies against the Soviets with iconic vehicles like the Tesla Tank and the Chrono Tank.
Story
A meteor shower brings Tiberium to Earth, a crystal that mutates organic life and threatens humanity. The Global Defense Force forms to contain the spread while the Brotherhood of Nod, led by the mysterious Kane, seeks to harness the crystal for evolution. This ideological war drives the plot through multiple decades of conflict involving nuclear strikes and alien technology.
In the alternate timeline of Red Alert, Albert Einstein erases Hitler from existence, causing Joseph Stalin to rise as the primary threat. The Allied nations fight a desperate war against Soviet aggression using experimental weapons and time-traveling heroes. Yuri emerges as a powerful psychic antagonist seeking to enslave the world mind.
