Chrono Trigger
"A time-traveling adventure that redefined the role-playing genre."
Overview
March 11, 1995 marked the release of a game that would soon be hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made. Players stepped into the shoes of Crono, a young man whose life changes when his friend Marle vanishes during the Millennial Fair in 1000 AD. Chasing her through a mysterious portal leads him across four distinct eras: prehistoric times, the medieval period, a dystopian future, and the apocalyptic End of Time. The group must stop the parasitic alien creature Lavos from awakening, which threatens to erase humanity entirely.
Square assembled a dream team for this project, bringing together Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama. This collaboration resulted in a narrative that broke away from linear storytelling by allowing players to revisit past events and alter the future. The game features over 40 different endings based on player choices and completion rates. Critics immediately praised the non-linear structure, the absence of random encounters, and the seamless integration of side quests that fleshed out character backstories.
The soundtrack stands as a pillar of the experience, composed by Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda. Their work utilized the SNES SPC700 sound chip to create orchestral-like compositions that remain influential decades later. Since its debut on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the title has been ported to platforms including PlayStation, Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows. A 2008 DS version introduced new content like the Black Omen dungeon, while recent announcements in late 2026 confirm new official releases and merchandise continuing its legacy.
Gameplay
Combat in Chrono Trigger revolutionized the turn-based formula by adapting the Active Time Battle system but removing the timer pressure on the Super Nintendo version. Players control their party's actions without a ticking clock forcing immediate decisions, allowing for strategic planning. Battles feature visible enemies on the field map, giving players the option to avoid fights or prepare strategically instead of facing random encounters.
A key mechanical innovation is the ability to combine attacks between characters. These Double Techs, Triple Techs, and Quad Techs require precise timing and coordination to execute powerful moves that can turn the tide of battle. The game tracks progress across all eras and character survival to determine the finale, encouraging multiple playthroughs to unlock every possible ending.
Story
Crono arrives in the prehistoric era after following Marle through a portal, where he teams up with Ayla. They journey to the medieval period to meet Lucca Ashtear, a brilliant inventor, and Magus, a sorcerer seeking revenge against the entity destroying the world. The group eventually recruits Robo, a robot from the future, and Frog, a knight cursed to become an amphibian.
The central conflict revolves around preventing Lavos from awakening in the past. If successful, the party stops the creature before it can trigger the chain of events leading to the destruction of the timeline. Unlike other RPGs of the era, the narrative structure allows players to change history. Events in one era ripple forward to affect others, creating a dynamic story where player choices directly influence the outcome.
