Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
Overview
Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II arrived on October 28, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It's the nineteenth mainline entry and a direct sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, picking up the reimagined Task Force 141 storyline. The campaign sends the team around the world with Mexico's Los Vaqueros, chasing terrorist leader Hassan Zyani, who has American-made ballistic missiles in his hands. Missions alternate between stealth infiltration, vehicle chases, and large-scale set-piece firefights. A rebuilt IW engine, the IW9 generation, powers the whole package, with an advanced AI system, enhanced rendering, and photogrammetry technology.
Multiplayer keeps cross-platform play while adding new movement options and a reworked Gunsmith weapon-customization system. Warzone 2.0, the free-to-play battle royale follow-up, sits inside the same Call of Duty HQ launcher, so players move between modes without leaving the app. The game carries an M rating for blood, strong language, and intense violence, in line with the rest of the franchise.
Critics responded well, and the sales numbers told an even louder story: it became the fastest Call of Duty to pass $1 billion in revenue. Modern Warfare III followed on November 10, 2023.
Gameplay
Infinity Ward rebuilt the engine for this one, calling it IW9, and it shows in the AI and the lighting. Enemies flank, suppress, and react to your movement in ways that feel less scripted than earlier entries. The Gunsmith returns with a deeper attachment system: most weapons have a tuning option that lets you slide specific stats like recoil or aim-down-sights speed, which changes how a gun feels beyond just picking five attachments. Campaign missions swap between quiet infiltration, driving sequences, and big firefights. The co-op Special Ops mode brings back narrative-driven missions for two players, tying into the campaign's story rather than standing apart from it.
Story
Task Force 141 reassembles under Captain John Price, with Kyle 'Gaz' Garrick, Simon 'Ghost' Riley, and John 'Soap' MacTavish rounding out the core. The campaign opens with a missile strike and unfolds across the Middle East, Mexico, and Europe as the team hunts Hassan Zyani, a terrorist leader armed with American ballistic missiles. Mexico's Los Vaqueros, led by Colonel Alejandro Vargas, fight alongside 141 in several missions. The story leans into the rebooted timeline's version of familiar characters and set pieces, including a reimagined take on the 'All Ghillied Up' style stealth sequence. The campaign's final act ties directly into the formation of a broader international task force, setting up the sequel.
