    Overview

PlatinumGames released Bayonetta on October 29, 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Hideki Kamiya directed the project, which introduced an urban fantasy setting where players control Cereza, a mysterious witch known as Bayonetta. The story follows her awakening after five centuries of slumber to fight celestial forces called the Lumen Sages while recovering fragmented memories of her past.

The game established a distinct combat system that blends third-person shooting with melee swordplay. Players utilize dual pistols mounted on the character's boots to perform aerial combos while dodging attacks at the last second to trigger "Witch Time," a mechanic that slows down enemy movement. Hair transforms into massive weapons like whips and swords, and colossal demons such as Madama Styx appear to clear groups of enemies during special sequences.

Sega published the original release before Nintendo acquired rights to the franchise for later entries and ports. The title expanded to platforms including Wii U, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Critical reception highlighted the fluid animation and unique art style, though some reviewers noted erratic pacing during Quick Time Event sequences in boss battles.

    Gameplay

Combat centers on chaining attacks without taking damage to earn high style rankings. Bayonetta fires dual handguns attached to her ankles while performing acrobatic maneuvers. The signature "Witch Time" ability activates when a dodge occurs within a fraction of a second of impact, allowing the player to unleash rapid counters against slowed opponents.

Players can summon large demons from the Inferno to attack enemies or use hair-based transformations for heavy melee strikes. Boss encounters frequently require inputting specific button combinations via Quick Time Events to execute finishing moves. The game features no multiplayer modes in its base form, focusing entirely on single-player narrative progression.

    Story

After waking from a 500-year seal, Bayonetta explores the fictional city of Vigrid while pursued by angels seeking her destruction. She discovers she is the daughter of the witch Jeanne and was created to destroy the world if humanity fails. Memories return slowly as she defeats various angelic commanders and learns about the conflict between the Lumen Church and the Demon World.

The narrative culminates in a confrontation with the Archangels who seek to erase all witches. Bayonetta defeats them and reunites with her mother, resolving the immediate threat while leaving the broader fate of the world open. The plot emphasizes themes of identity and memory rather than traditional good versus evil tropes.
