    Overview

Ubisoft Singapore delivers a full ground-up remake of the 2013 pirate epic, built on a heavily upgraded Anvil engine. The Jackdaw sails again with ray-traced lighting, 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on consoles, and near-instant load times thanks to SSD architecture. On PC, the game supports uncapped frame rates, ultrawide monitors, DLSS 3.5, and FSR 3.0. Beyond the visual overhaul, the remake introduces refined naval controls with adaptive trigger feedback on PS5 and Xbox Series controllers, enhanced ship damage models featuring dynamic hull breaches and fire propagation, and smarter enemy AI that reacts to stealth and combat in more believable ways.

New quality-of-life features include auto-loot, streamlined crafting, and a revised fast-travel system. Tactical stealth options like whistle distractions, hanging ledge assassinations, and blowpipe upgrades give players more ways to approach encounters. Expanded diving bell sections now offer deeper underwater ruins and treasure hunts. The core experience remains faithful to the original, but every system has been tuned for modern expectations.

The story follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer-turned-pirate who gets caught in the war between Assassins and Templars. Set in the early 18th-century Caribbean, the narrative begins with Edward seeking fortune and glory. He commandeers the brig Jackdaw, assembles a pirate crew, and befriends historical figures like Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold, Mary Read, and Anne Bonny. The plot explores freedom, greed, and ambition as Edward uncovers a Templar conspiracy involving the Observatory, a device that can track anyone using blood samples. The remake keeps the original story but adds new optional memory sequences that expand on Edward's backstory and his relationship with his daughter, setting up connections to later Assassin's Creed titles.

Creative director Jean-Luc Sala, previously on Assassin's Creed Origins and Skull and Bones, leads the project alongside producer Mathieu Delisle. Original narrative director Darby McDevitt served as a consultant on the story. The game launched on July 9, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, selling 4.2 million units in its first week, making it the fastest-selling remake in Ubisoft's history. By the end of July, total sales reached 6.8 million units. The soundtrack, a remastered version of Brian Tyler's original score, charted on Spotify's Global Top 50 Video Game Soundtracks for four weeks.

    Gameplay

Players explore an open-world Caribbean setting, engaging in naval combat and ship-to-ship boarding, free-running across cities and jungles, and performing stealth assassinations. The Jackdaw serves as the player's mobile base, upgradeable with new cannons, hull armor, and crew abilities. Naval battles feature dynamic weather and waves that affect ship handling. On land, the combat system blends sword fights, hidden blade assassinations, and ranged attacks with pistols and blowpipes. The remake adds tactical stealth options like whistle distractions and hanging ledge assassinations, plus expanded diving bell sections with underwater ruins. Quality-of-life improvements include auto-loot, streamlined crafting, and a revised fast-travel system. Multiplayer offers 8-player competitive modes: Wolfpack (co-op), Deathmatch, and Domination, with cross-platform play, new maps based on Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, and over 100 unlockable outfits. Ranked play and seasonal leaderboards are included, and the multiplayer is free-to-play for base game owners with no gameplay-affecting microtransactions.

    Story

Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer, arrives in the Caribbean in 1715 seeking fortune and glory. After a shipwreck, he kills a Templar agent and assumes his identity, inadvertently joining the Templar hunt for the Observatory, a device that can spy on anyone using a blood sample. Edward commandeers the brig Jackdaw and assembles a pirate crew, befriending Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold, Mary Read, and Anne Bonny. As he builds his pirate empire, he learns of the Assassin-Templar war and finds himself torn between his own greed and the ideals of the Assassin Brotherhood. The climax takes place at the Observatory, where Edward confronts the Templar Grand Master, choosing to destroy the device rather than let it fall into either faction's hands. The remake adds new optional memory sequences that explore Edward's relationship with his daughter, setting up connections to later Assassin's Creed games. The story remains a meditation on freedom, the cost of ambition, and the meaning of legacy.
