Galaxy Express 999

In the far future, humanity has achieved a chilling form of immortality by transferring consciousness into mechanical bodies. But for the poor, this technology remains out of reach. Young Tetsuro Hoshino, a boy from the slums, dreams of escaping his miserable life and obtaining a free mechanical body on the planet Andromeda. His only way there is the Galaxy Express 999, a celestial steam locomotive that travels between stars. Along the way, he is joined by the mysterious and beautiful Maetel, who guides him on his journey, but her true motives remain unclear. This manga, written and illustrated by Leiji Matsumoto, blends science fiction with a poignant coming-of-age story, exploring themes of mortality, inequality, and the cost of progress. First serialized in 1977, the series was collected into tankōbon volumes, with the complete story running over 200 pages in print. It won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen in 1978 and later inspired a popular anime series that took the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1981. Matsumoto drew inspiration from Kenji Miyazawa's novel Night on the Galactic Railroad, reimagining its dreamlike train journey as a spacefaring adventure.
