Galatasaray Spor Kulübü is a Turkish professional football club based in Istanbul. Founded in October 1905 by Ali Sami Yen and fellow students of Galatasaray High School, it is the oldest Turkish football club. The club's name was chosen after debates over suggestions like Gloria and Audace. Ali Sami Yen stated the founding aim: to play together like Englishmen, to have a color and a name, and to beat non-Turkish teams. The first match ended in a 2–0 victory against Cadi-Keuy FC.

Galatasaray is one of three teams to have participated in every Süper Lig season since 1959. The club holds Turkish records for most Süper Lig titles (26), Turkish Cup titles (19), and Turkish Super Cup titles (17). In the 1999–2000 season, Galatasaray completed an unprecedented treble: Süper Lig, Turkish Cup, and UEFA Cup. They defeated Arsenal on penalties in the UEFA Cup final and later beat Real Madrid to win the UEFA Super Cup. Galatasaray remains the only Turkish club to win a major UEFA competition. According to IFFHS, it is the most successful Turkish club of the 20th century and the 20th most successful in Europe.

The club's home venue is Rams Park (Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi) in Seyrantepe, with a capacity of 53,798. Previous homes include the original Ali Sami Yen Stadium (1964–2010) and earlier grounds like Taksim Stadium and Dolmabahçe Stadium. Galatasaray's fierce rivalries with Fenerbahçe (the Intercontinental Derby) and Beşiktaş are among the most passionate in world football. Galatasaray was founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen and students of Galatasaray High School. Because the Ottoman Empire had no laws governing sports clubs, Galatasaray could not be officially registered until 1912, making it the first Turkish football club. Under English coach Horace Armitage, the team won its first Istanbul Football League title in 1908–09. Armitage introduced professional training methods and served as player-manager. In the 1920s, Billy Hunter led the club to three consecutive Istanbul League titles (1925, 1926, 1927).

The club became a founding member of the Milli Lig (now Süper Lig) in 1959 and won its first national championship in 1962 under Gündüz Kılıç, who also played for the club. The 1960s saw legendary striker Metin Oktay become the club's all-time leading scorer. Galatasaray won its first Turkish Cup in 1972. The 1980s brought success under German coach Jupp Derwall, who led the team to Süper Lig titles in 1986–87 and 1987–88, ending a long drought. Derwall also won the Turkish Cup in 1984–85.

The golden era arrived under Fatih Terim in the late 1990s. In the 1999–2000 season, Galatasaray completed a historic treble: winning the Süper Lig, Turkish Cup, and UEFA Cup. The UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen saw Galatasaray defeat Arsenal 4–1 on penalties after a 0–0 draw. Later that year, they beat Real Madrid 2–1 in Monaco to win the UEFA Super Cup. Key players included Gheorghe Hagi, Hakan Şükür, and Cláudio Taffarel. The club reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2000–01 and the European Cup semi-finals in 1988–89.

In the 2010s, Galatasaray continued domestic dominance, winning multiple Süper Lig titles under coaches like Fatih Terim and Roberto Mancini. The club moved to Rams Park in 2011. Recent resurgence under Okan Buruk has brought three consecutive Süper Lig titles (2022–23, 2023–24, 2024–25) and strong Champions League performances, including a 3–0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam in November 2024 and a draw against Atlético Madrid at home.
