G.R.L. was assembled in Los Angeles in 2013 through open auditions overseen by Ron Fair and Robin Antin, the mastermind behind the Pussycat Dolls. The five chosen members underwent months of vocal training, choreography sessions, and image development before their first public appearance. Their debut single "Vacation," released on July 30, 2013, was a bubbly pop track featured on The Smurfs 2 soundtrack. The group gained wider recognition in February 2014 with "Wild Wild Love," a collaboration with Pitbull that peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten in the United Kingdom. The song was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

G.R.L.'s defining moment came with the July 2014 release of "Ugly Heart," an empowering mid-tempo anthem that blended pop harmonies with a doo-wop bridge. The single became the group's biggest hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and charting in the top five in Australia and New Zealand. It was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA. The group released a self-titled EP on July 29, 2014, which peaked at number 124 on the Billboard 200. Plans for a full-length debut album were underway when tragedy struck: on September 5, 2014, Simone Battle died by suicide at age 25.

In the wake of Battle's death, the remaining members released "Lighthouse" in March 2015, a ballad dedicated to her memory. The group then went on a year-long hiatus before returning as a trio in 2016, consisting of Bennett, Slayton, and new member Jazzy Mejia. They released two singles, "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "Are We Gonna Be Alright?," but disbanded later that year without issuing a full album. In 2015, a fan-led crowdfunding campaign raised enough money to place a billboard in Los Angeles honoring Battle. The group's official Facebook page accumulated over 500,000 likes, while their Twitter account had around 50,000 followers. Simone Battle was a finalist on the first season of The X Factor US in 2011, where she was mentored by Simon Cowell. Lauren Bennett had previously been a member of the Paradiso Girls, another Robin Antin project, and also sang on LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem." "Ugly Heart" was co-written by Ester Dean, who has written hits for Rihanna and Katy Perry. The trio's 2016 single "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" was a cover of The Temptations' classic Motown song. G.R.L. never released a full studio album; their planned debut was scrapped after Battle's death.
