Future Diary
Sakae Esuno
Overview
Yukiteru Amano spends his days hiding from the world, recording his mundane life in a text-based diary on his phone. His isolation shatters when he receives a message predicting events ten minutes ahead of time. Soon after, a stranger named Deus Ex Machina appears and reveals that Yukiteru is one of twelve participants in a survival game where each person holds a unique future-predicting device. The rules are simple yet brutal: use your diary to survive while eliminating the others, and the last one standing becomes the new God of Time and Space.
The narrative quickly shifts focus to Yuno Gasai, a classmate who seems to know more about the game than she lets on. Her obsession with Yukiteru drives much of the story's tension as she uses her own diary to protect him at any cost, often resorting to extreme violence. Sakae Esuno weaves themes of trust and betrayal through this chaotic setup, forcing characters to question whether their futures are fixed or if they can change fate by altering their actions.
Published in Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace magazine between January 2006 and December 2010, the series collected into twelve tankōbon volumes. Yen Press later licensed the work for English-speaking markets, releasing the complete set in print. While the manga gained a cult following internationally, its graphic depictions of violence and disturbing content have sparked debate among critics and readers alike regarding its suitability for younger audiences.
