Funimation

Funimation, stylized as FUNimation, was an American entertainment company that played a central role in bringing Japanese animation to North American audiences. Founded in 1994 by Gen Fukunaga and his wife Cindy, with backing from the Cocanougher family, the company initially focused on licensing and dubbing anime for the home video market. Its first major project was the English dub of Dragon Ball Z, a series that would become a cultural touchstone and set the company on a path to becoming one of the most recognizable names in the industry. For three decades, Funimation operated from its headquarters in Dallas, Texas, building a reputation for high-quality dubs and a deep catalog of popular titles.

The company launched its streaming service in April 2009, offering a mix of subtitled and dubbed anime. Over the years, the platform grew to include thousands of episodes across hundreds of series, including hits like One Piece, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Funimation distinguished itself with its simuldub program, releasing English-dubbed episodes shortly after their Japanese broadcast, a practice that attracted a dedicated subscriber base. The service was available on a wide range of devices, including smartphones, smart TVs, and gaming consoles, and it became known as the go-to destination for fans who preferred dubbed content.

In 2017, Sony Pictures Television acquired a majority stake in Funimation, and by 2019 the company became a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Aniplex. Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 set the stage for a consolidation of its anime streaming operations. In March 2022, the parent company was rebranded as Crunchyroll, LLC, and Funimation's catalog began migrating to Crunchyroll. The Funimation streaming service continued to operate during the transition, but it officially shut down on April 2, 2024. Today, the Funimation brand lives on only through its legacy, as its extensive library of dubbed anime remains available on Crunchyroll, and its founder, Gen Fukunaga, has moved on to new ventures in the animation industry.
