Fukushima United FC

Fukushima United FC is a professional football club based in Fukushima City, the capital of Fukushima Prefecture. The team competes in the J3 League, Japan's third tier of professional football. Founded in 2002 as a merger of local clubs, the club represents a region known for its resilience after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Their home matches are played at Toho Stadium, a 21,000-seat venue. The club's colors are red and white, and their nickname is the "Red Spirits." While they have not yet reached the J2 League, they maintain a loyal local following. The team focuses on developing young talent from the Tohoku region and has a partnership with the Fukushima Prefectural Government for community outreach. The club started life in April 2002 as Fukushima Dream Junkers, a name that didn't last long. In 2006, two local sides, FC Pelada Fukushima and Junkers, merged, and by the 2008 season the club had settled on its current identity, Fukushima United FC. The phoenix on the badge was chosen deliberately: a symbol of rebirth for a prefecture still healing from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear disaster that followed.

For years the team played in the Tohoku Soccer League and the Japan Football League, winning the Tohoku title at one point. They joined the J.League in 2014 as part of the newly formed J3 League, the third tier. Their best finishes came in 2021 and 2024, when they placed 5th, tantalizingly close to a promotion playoff spot but never quite breaking through. In 2025 they finished 10th out of 20 teams, a mid-table result that reflected their steady but unspectacular growth.

Off the pitch, the club made headlines in 2025 by announcing plans for a new 5,000-seat circular timber stadium, designed by architecture firm VUILD. It will be Japan's first circular timber soccer stadium, built with locally sourced Fukushima wood and powered by renewable energy, a physical embodiment of the region's recovery story. [edit]
