On June 20, 1935, the Fujitsu Laboratory opened its doors as a subsidiary of the Furukawa Electric Group. The name combines "Fuji" from Mount Fuji and "tsu" meaning connection, setting a mission to link people with technology. The entity split from its parent company in 1967 to become an independent operation. Today it stands as the sixth-largest IT services provider globally with roughly 124,000 employees spread across more than 50 countries.

President and CEO Masahiro Koyama leads the organization through a major pivot toward digital transformation and its "Society 5.0" vision. The company focuses on solving complex societal challenges using technology in sectors ranging from healthcare to public services. Its recent strategy emphasizes sustainability alongside innovation, driving initiatives like the PACT program to help suppliers reduce emissions throughout the value chain.

Fujitsu historically built its reputation on A-series mainframes and SPARC servers before shifting focus to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The Fugaku supercomputer recently dominated global rankings, showcasing the firm's deep engineering capabilities. In a significant structural change effective January 1, 2026, the consumer HVAC division officially rebranded as GENERAL Inc., though the product line retains the Fujitsu General name in many markets.
