“The movie is full of wonders, and also full of questions, which it pursues with a seriousness that may surprise viewers expecting a lighter, more conventional sequel.”

Frozen 2 is an animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released in 2019, the sequel to the studio's enormously successful earlier film. Picking up some time after the events of the original, the story follows the sisters Anna and Elsa, along with their companions, as they journey beyond their kingdom into an enchanted forest to uncover the mysterious origins of Elsa's magical powers and confront secrets from their family's past. The film deepens and expands the world established in its predecessor, exploring more mature themes of identity, change, memory and growing up, while maintaining the warmth, humor and sisterly bond at the heart of the franchise. It featured more advanced animation than the original, with visually ambitious depictions of nature and the elements, and brought back its songwriting team to create a new slate of songs, several of which became popular hits. Released amid enormous anticipation given the cultural phenomenon the first film had become, Frozen 2 was a massive commercial success, ranking among the highest-grossing animated films ever made and reaching audiences around the globe through translations into many languages. While critical reception was generally positive, with praise for its animation, music and emotional depth, some reviewers felt it did not fully recapture the magic of the original. Even so, Frozen 2 stands as a major entry in one of Disney's most beloved modern franchises.

Three years have passed since Elsa saved Arendelle and accepted her ice powers. The kingdom thrives under the joint rule of Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, while Kristoff and Anna's romance has deepened, with Kristoff preparing a proposal. Olaf enjoys his newfound permanence, and Sven remains loyal as ever.
Everything changes when Elsa begins hearing a mysterious melodic voice calling from the north. The voice grows insistent, and one night, elemental spirits of fire, water, earth, and air awaken, forcing the evacuation of Arendelle. Grand Pabbie the troll explains that the spirits are angered by a past wrong committed by their grandfather, King Runeard. He tells Elsa that her powers are a gift linked to the spirits, and she must journey to the Enchanted Forest to find the truth and restore balance.
Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven enter the mist-shrouded forest and discover it has been frozen in time for decades. Inside, they meet the Northuldra, a nomadic people who live in harmony with nature, and the remnants of Arendelle's army, led by Lieutenant Destin Mattias, trapped since a conflict with the Northuldra. The group learns that the voice Elsa hears is connected to a magical entity called the Fifth Spirit, which bridges humans and the elemental spirits.
As they explore, they encounter elemental challenges: a playful fire salamander named Bruni, stone giants that guard the forest, and a water horse called the Nokk that protects the secrets of the past. Elsa struggles to control her powers in new ways, while Anna fears losing her sister again. Kristoff's proposal attempts go comically awry, and Olaf contemplates the nature of change. The central conflict emerges as Elsa realizes she must journey alone to the far north, to a mythical glacier called Ahtohallan, where all memories are preserved, to discover the truth about the voice and her own origins.

Critical Consensus
Frozen 2 is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant sequel that expands the mythology of its predecessor while exploring mature themes of identity and change. Though it lacks the tight narrative focus and instant classic songbook of the original, its breathtaking animation, strong voice performances, and heartfelt sisterly bond make it a worthy continuation that will satisfy fans.

“Though it doesn't recapture the magic of the first film, 'Frozen 2' offers a deeper, more visually ambitious story that asks its characters, and its audience, to confront the uncomfortable truths of the past.”
Peter Debruge
Variety
“The animation is breathtaking, the songs are catchy, and the emotional core remains the powerful bond between two sisters. But the story feels overstuffed and at times confusing.”
David Rooney
The Hollywood Reporter
“It's a more mature, more complicated film than its predecessor, but it's also a messier one, struggling to balance its ambitious themes with the demands of a family-friendly musical.”
Brian Tallerico
RogerEbert.com
“The film's greatest strength is its willingness to let its characters grow and change, even if that means the story occasionally stumbles. The animation is a triumph, and the music grows on you.”
