Front Line
"Vertical scrolling combat with vehicle switching mechanics"
Overview
Taito released Front Line in 1982 as an arcade cabinet that established key conventions for the overhead run and gun subgenre. Players controlled a soldier navigating vertically scrolling battlefields using a specialized control panel that combined a joystick, a fire button, and a rotary dial for precise aiming directions. This setup allowed for granular movement control that standard joysticks of the era could not provide.
The core loop required constant adaptation between infantry tactics and vehicle operation. Soldiers could throw grenades while on foot or take command of tanks to traverse dangerous zones. These shifts demanded quick reflexes as enemies attacked from multiple angles during the continuous upward scroll of the map.
Gameplay
Players navigate through war zones by moving their character upward across the screen while engaging enemy forces. The unique rotary dial controller enabled 360-degree aiming which was rare for arcade shooters at the time. Combat involves shooting enemies on foot or piloting tanks to break through heavy resistance. Grenades serve as a secondary weapon option for clearing clusters of opponents.
