From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman

Shigeru Sagazaki delivers a warm, funny fantasy about a middle-aged swordsman who just wants to be left alone. Beryl Gardinant runs a small dojo in the sticks, having trained a handful of kids who went on to become legendary warriors. He figures his glory days are behind him. Then one of those former students, Allucia Citrus, now a high-ranking knight commander, shows up to recruit him as a special instructor for the kingdom's elite order. Beryl protests, deflects, and tries to hide, but his students keep pulling him into political intrigue, monster fights, and the occasional awkward reunion.

The series began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in November 2020, then got picked up by Square Enix for their SQEX Novel imprint in April 2021. Ten volumes have come out in Japan as of 2025. Kazuki Satō launched a manga adaptation in Akita Shoten's Dokodemo Young Champion in August 2021, and an anime by Passione and Hayabusa Film ran from April to June 2025, with a second season due in July 2026. The English light novel is handled by J-Novel Club, while Yen Press publishes the manga stateside.

What sets this apart from other 'hidden badass' stories is how much mileage Sagazaki gets from Beryl's perspective. He's not a teenager discovering hidden powers; he's a guy in his forties who knows exactly what he can do but would rather tend his garden. The humor comes from his students' affectionate exasperation, and the action lands harder because Beryl's reluctance makes every fight feel earned. Two spin-off manga, The Mage Knight's Origin and The Twin Dragonblade's Journey to the Top, expand on side characters, and the WEBTOON adaptation had racked up over 9.9 million views by mid-2026.
