    About

Freshlyground is an Afro-fusion band from Cape Town, currently active and riding a new wave of energy. The group is best known for co-writing and performing "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" with Shakira, the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem. That song's music video has racked up over 4.2 billion views on YouTube, making it one of the most-watched clips ever.

After a five-year hiatus, Freshlyground returned in late 2024 with a new lead vocalist, Mbali Makhoba, who was just 20 when she joined. Their 2026 album Take Me Home marks this fresh chapter, blending their signature township soul with a contemporary edge. Fans old and new are finding something to love in this evolved lineup.

    Formation Story

Freshlyground came together in Cape Town in 2002, a melting pot of musicians from across Africa. The founding members shared a passion for blending traditional South African sounds with global genres like folk, blues, jazz, and indie rock. They started playing local venues, building a reputation for their lively performances and genre-defying sets.

The band's early years were about finding their voice. They released their debut album, Nomvula, in 2004, which introduced their unique Afro-fusion style to a growing fanbase. Tracks like "Doo Be Doo" and "I'd Like" became local hits, and the band quickly became a staple of the South African music scene.

Their big breakthrough came in 2008 with Radio Africa, an album that caught international attention and led to tours across Europe and the US. But it was 2010 that changed everything. Freshlyground collaborated with Shakira on "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", the official anthem of the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa. The song became a global phenomenon, and the band's profile skyrocketed.

After years of touring and releasing albums, the band went on hiatus around 2019. They returned in late 2024, announcing a new era with Mbali Makhoba as lead vocalist. The first single in seven years dropped in November 2025, followed by the album Take Me Home in April 2026.

Their lyrics tackle themes of love, social justice, and everyday life, often in a mix of English and African languages. With Mbali Makhoba's bluesy, soulful vocals, the band's sound has evolved to include more contemporary R&B influences, as heard on Take Me Home. That album addresses modern pressures like social media and corruption, showing a band that's tuned into the times.
