Fred Warner

Federico Anthony Warner is an American professional football linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. Born in San Marcos, California, he established himself as a defensive anchor through relentless consistency and high-level football intelligence rather than relying solely on raw athletic metrics.

Warner's career trajectory defied early expectations when he was selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He immediately became a starter and has since evolved into one of the most decorated linebackers in the league. As of October 2026, he holds the franchise record for career tackles, surpassing the legendary Patrick Willis to cement his status as the greatest linebacker in team history. [edit]

Federico Anthony Warner grew up in San Marcos, California, where he attended Escondido High School. Unlike many peers who received national attention, Warner was not heavily recruited out of high school. Scouts viewed his athletic measurements as modest compared to other top prospects at his position, leading him to receive scholarship offers from mid-tier programs rather than powerhouses.

He chose to attend Brigham Young University, a decision that initially drew skepticism from some observers. During his college years, Warner focused intensely on film study and technique. His work ethic transformed him into a dominant force, culminating in a senior season where he led the nation in tackles and earned consensus All-American honors. This period proved that his mental acuity could compensate for perceived physical limitations, setting the stage for his professional breakthrough. [edit]

Selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, Warner started every game at inside linebacker during his rookie season. He recorded 125 combined tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. The following year marked his breakout; he tallied 138 tackles, three interceptions, and five passes defended to earn his first Pro Bowl selection and First-Team All-Pro honors.

From 2019 through 2026, Warner maintained elite production. He led the NFL in total tackles with 167 in 2022 and secured multiple First-Team All-Pro selections in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. In September 2026, he achieved a historic milestone by surpassing Patrick Willis to become the all-time leading tackler in San Francisco 49ers history. His ability to stay healthy and perform at a high level has made him the undisputed leader of the defense. [edit]

Fred Warner is portrayed as the epitome of the hardworking, humble athlete. Warner also credits a sports psychologist with helping him overcome a period of doubt early in his career. [edit]
