Overview
Playground Games returns with Forza Horizon 5, the fifth entry in the open-world racing series and the twelfth mainline Forza title. Set in a vibrant, fictionalized version of Mexico, the game offers a massive and diverse landscape: arid deserts, lush tropical jungles, historic colonial cities, snow-capped volcanoes, and pristine beaches. Players explore freely, competing in hundreds of events across road racing, off-road rallies, stunt jumps, and the returning Horizon Arcade. The Horizon Festival serves as the hub, where you build your own outposts and unlock new experiences. Released on November 9, 2021 for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, it was the last mainline Forza game on Xbox One. In a historic move, it launched on PlayStation 5 on April 29, 2025, marking the first time a main Forza title reached a non-Microsoft platform.
Forza Horizon 5 attracted over 10 million players in its first week, the biggest launch ever for an Xbox Game Studios title. Critics praised its stunning open world, refined driving physics, and deep customization. It won IGN's Game of the Year, three jury-voted awards at The Game Awards 2021 (tying with It Takes Two for most wins), and Racing Game of the Year at the 25th D.I.C.E. Awards. A sequel, Forza Horizon 6, arrived on May 19, 2026.
Gameplay
Forza Horizon 5 is an open-world racing game where players drive a variety of vehicles across a fictionalized Mexico. The core loop involves participating in events to earn experience, credits, and influence, which unlocks new races, cars, and festival outposts. The game features multiple disciplines: road racing, street racing, dirt racing, cross-country, drifting, and PR stunts (speed traps, danger signs, drift zones). Horizon Arcade offers cooperative multiplayer mini-games like speed traps and drift zones. The Eliminator is a battle royale mode where players parachute in and race to the finish. Convoy mode allows friends to drive together in a group. EventLab lets players create custom races, game modes, and obstacle courses. The game supports deep vehicle customization, including performance upgrades, tuning, and a livery editor. Dynamic seasons change the environment and driving conditions weekly. The open world is seamless with no loading screens between events.
Story
The narrative is minimal, typical of the series. The player arrives at the Horizon Festival in Mexico, quickly rises through the ranks, and helps expand the festival by completing expeditions and showcasing driving skills. There is no traditional plot or character arc; the story serves as a framework for exploration and progression. The main campaign involves building and customizing festival outposts across Mexico, unlocking new events, story missions, and challenges.
