    Overview

Peter Bretter is having the worst week of his life. The aspiring musician, who scores TV shows like Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime, gets dumped via text message by his girlfriend of five years, actress Sarah Marshall. To make matters worse, she's already moved on to Aldous Snow, a British rock star with a penchant for outrageous behavior. Heartbroken and directionless, Peter takes his best friend Brian's advice to escape to Hawaii for a vacation. What he doesn't expect is to run into Sarah and Aldous at the same resort, forcing him to confront his feelings while trying to enjoy a tropical getaway.

Directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by star Jason Segel, this 2008 comedy blends raunchy humor with genuine emotion. Segel plays Peter, with Kristen Bell as the titular Sarah, Mila Kunis as the resort's friendly receptionist Rachel, and Russell Brand stealing scenes as the eccentric Aldous. Produced by Judd Apatow's company, the film fits squarely in the Apatow comedy mold: awkward situations, improv-heavy dialogue, and a surprising amount of heart. Made on a $30 million budget, it grossed over $105 million worldwide, a solid hit that helped launch Brand's Hollywood career and solidified Segel as a leading man. With an R rating and a tone that swings from cringe comedy to sweet romance, Forgetting Sarah Marshall remains a standout of the late-2000s comedy boom.

    PlotSpoiler-free

Peter Bretter, a composer for the fake TV show Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime, has been dating its star Sarah Marshall for five years. He's devoted, but insecure, and the relationship is slipping. One night, in the middle of a vulnerable moment, Sarah breaks up with him via text message. Peter is devastated, spiraling into a depression that includes uncontrollable crying, wandering the streets in a daze, and a humiliating one-night stand that leaves him feeling worse.

His stepbrother Brian (Bill Hader) pushes him to take a vacation, so Peter books a trip to a luxurious Hawaiian resort. He hopes the sun and distance will help him heal. But on his first day, he spots Sarah with her new boyfriend, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), a flamboyant British rock star known for his self-indulgent lifestyle and pseudo-spiritual platitudes. They're staying at the same resort, and Peter is horrified. He repeatedly runs into the couple, forced to watch their public displays of affection while trying to salvage his own getaway.

At the resort, Peter befriends Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis), a warm, down-to-earth front desk employee who listens to his problems without judgment. Despite the chaos, a genuine connection forms between them. Peter also encounters a colorful cast of characters, including the resort's overly enthusiastic staff and a perpetually shirtless surf instructor named Chuck (Paul Rudd). He finds an unexpected outlet for his emotions when he discovers a local production of a puppet rock opera he wrote called Dracula: The Musical, a deeply personal project he had been working on during his relationship with Sarah. As Peter navigates his heartbreak, jealousy, and self-discovery, he must decide whether to wallow in his misery or embrace the possibility of moving on.
