Focus Features
United StatesAbout
Focus Features started in 2002 when Universal Pictures merged its specialty divisions USA Films and Good Machine into one label. Good Machine had been a powerhouse in independent film, co-founded by David Linde and James Schamus, who had produced movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The new company was designed to give arthouse and foreign films the muscle of a major studio's distribution network while keeping their creative independence intact.
From the start, Focus carved out a distinct identity. Its early releases included Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Roman Polanski's The Pianist, which took three Academy Awards including Best Director. The company quickly became known for taking risks on challenging material, like Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain in 2005, a film that sparked cultural conversations and earned eight Oscar nominations. That same year, Focus also released Pride & Prejudice and The Constant Gardener, showing a range from literary adaptations to political thrillers.
Over the years, Focus has built a reputation as a home for director-driven work, releasing films by Wes Anderson, Spike Lee, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Its partnership with Neon on Parasite in 2019 led to the first non-English language film winning Best Picture. The company also operates Focus World, a label for digital and on-demand releases, and has a first-look deal with Steven Soderbergh as of 2024. With a steady stream of awards contenders like The Holdovers and Poor Things, Focus remains a key player in the space where art and commerce meet.
