Founded in 1954 by André Essel and Max Théret, the name originally stood for Fédération Nationale d'Achats des Cadres, reflecting its beginnings as a buying cooperative for executives. The first store opened in Paris that year, offering discounted goods to members, a model that resonated in post-war France. By the 1970s, Fnac had evolved into a cultural institution, known for democratizing access to books, music, and electronics through its cultural discount strategy.
