Flower and Asura
Ayano Takeda
Overview
Flower and Asura (Japanese: 花は咲く、修羅の如く, Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku) stands apart in the seinen genre by swapping athletic tournaments for the intimate art of oral storytelling. Ayano Takeda wrote the series while Musshu handled the illustrations, launching it in Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine back in June 2021. The first collected volume arrived on January 19, 2022, under the Young Jump Comics imprint.
The narrative unfolds on Tonakishima, a fictional island modeled after Kyoto's Ukyō Ward with a population around 600 people. Hana, a quiet high school student, spends her days reading aloud to local children. Her natural ability to captivate listeners catches the eye of Mizuki, the Broadcasting Club president, who recruits her to join the club. Together they explore the technical and emotional layers of voice performance as they prepare for recitation contests.
Critics praised the manga for its fresh take on school life clubs and its deep dive into character interiority. Studio Bind adapted the work into a 12-episode anime that aired from January 8 to March 26, 2025. The show received positive feedback for its sound design and animation quality, though some viewers felt the pacing started slowly before Hana gained more agency.
