Flower and Asura

Flower and Asura (花は咲く、修羅の如く, Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku), often shortened to Hanashura, is a Japanese manga series written by Ayano Takeda and illustrated by Musshu. Serialization began in Shueisha's seinen magazine Ultra Jump in June 2021, with the first volume released on January 19, 2022. The story blends coming-of-age drama with the art of oral recitation, offering a fresh take on high school club activities.

Set on the fictional island of Tonakishima, loosely based on Kyoto's Ukyō Ward, the series follows Hana, a high school girl who loves reciting stories and regularly holds reading sessions for local children. Her friend Mizuki, president of the Broadcasting Club, notices Hana's magnetic presence and invites her to join. Through the club, Hana discovers the power of voice performance, competing in recitation contests while navigating friendships and personal growth.

The manga has been praised for its nuanced character writing and unique focus on spoken-word performance. A 12-episode anime adaptation by Studio Bind aired from January to March 2025, bringing Hana's passionate readings to life with expressive animation and sound design.[edit]
