Fleabag

Phoebe Waller-Bridge created and stars in this raw, funny, and deeply human comedy-drama about a young woman navigating life in London. Originally developed from her one-woman stage show, the series aired on BBC Three (season 1) and BBC One (season 2) from 2016 to 2019, totaling 12 episodes across two seasons. Waller-Bridge plays the unnamed protagonist, simply called Fleabag, a dry-witted, sexually active cafe owner grappling with grief, guilt, and loneliness. Sian Clifford plays her tightly wound sister Claire, and Andrew Scott appears in season 2 as a charismatic priest who becomes a love interest. The show balances sharp, often uncomfortable humor with moments of devastating emotional honesty, earning widespread critical acclaim. The series began as a fringe theatre sensation. Waller-Bridge first performed Fleabag as a solo play at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013, where it won a Fringe First Award. The television adaptation expands the world while keeping the core device of Fleabag breaking the fourth wall to confide in the audience. Fleabag runs a guinea pig-themed cafe in London, a business she started with her late best friend Boo. Boo's suicide, which Fleabag partly blames herself for, happened two years before the series begins. Fleabag's mother died of cancer even earlier. These losses leave her adrift, using casual sex and sharp sarcasm as shields against intimacy. Her family offers little comfort: her father has remarried a cold, passive-aggressive godmother (Olivia Colman), and her sister Claire (Sian Clifford) is a successful but emotionally repressed businesswoman married to a boorish man named Martin. Fleabag's relationship with Claire is a tangle of love, jealousy, and unspoken resentments.

Season one follows Fleabag's chaotic attempts to keep her cafe afloat while navigating a series of failed romantic entanglements. She dates a sweet but needy man named Harry, has meaningless encounters with a man she calls Arsehole Guy, and briefly reconnects with an old flame. Through flashbacks, we learn about her friendship with Boo and the events leading to Boo's death. The season builds to a family dinner that exposes all the buried tensions, ending with Fleabag at her most vulnerable, having lost her cafe and her last shred of denial about her loneliness.

Season two jumps ahead eighteen months. Fleabag's cafe is thriving, she seems calmer, and she has tentatively reconciled with Claire. But at their father's engagement party, she meets a Catholic priest (Andrew Scott) who is about to officiate the wedding. Their immediate, charged connection becomes the season's central relationship. The Priest is warm, funny, and genuinely interested in Fleabag, but his commitment to his faith and his own demons create an impossible barrier.
