    Overview

Flappy Bird hit the App Store in May 2013 with little fanfare, a tiny mobile game from Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen and his company .Gears. The concept is brutally simple: tap the screen to make a small bird named Faby flap upward, then guide it through gaps between green pipes without crashing. Each successful pass earns one point. Nguyen built the game in just a few days, repurposing the bird from a cancelled 2012 project. The graphics are deliberately retro, with blocky sprites and a bright blue sky, but the gameplay is anything but forgiving. One mistimed tap and it is game over, forcing you to restart from zero.

For months, Flappy Bird sat near the bottom of app store charts. Then, in early 2014, something clicked. The game exploded into a global sensation, becoming the most downloaded free app on iOS by late January. Nguyen later revealed the game was pulling in $50,000 daily from ads and sales. Critics were split: some panned the high difficulty and accused it of ripping off Super Mario Bros. pipe designs, while others found the simple loop weirdly addictive. Either way, millions of players were hooked, tapping furiously on their phones.

Then came the shock. On February 10, 2014, Nguyen pulled Flappy Bird from both the App Store and Google Play. He said he felt guilty about how addictive the game was and how much time people spent on it. The removal only fueled the frenzy: phones with the game still installed sold for huge sums online, and clones flooded app stores. Later that year, Nguyen released Flappy Birds Family exclusively for Amazon Fire TV, and Bay Tek Games produced a licensed arcade cabinet. Flappy Bird remains a bizarre footnote in mobile gaming history: a simple, frustrating game that became a phenomenon, then vanished overnight.

    Gameplay

Players tap the screen to make Faby flap upward, navigating through gaps between green pipes. Each gap passed scores one point. Colliding with a pipe or the ground ends the game immediately, requiring a restart from zero. The game has no save system, no levels, and runs at a fixed 60 frames per second with minimal sprite animations.
