Fire Emblem Engage
"Bond with legendary heroes and reshape the fate of Elyos."
Overview
Fire Emblem Engage launched on January 20, 2023, as the seventeenth main entry in Nintendo's long-running tactical role-playing franchise. Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo exclusively for the Switch, this title returns to the series' roots while introducing a vibrant new visual direction. The game features full 3D character models and dynamic animations during dialogue scenes, moving away from the static portraits seen in earlier entries.
Players step into the boots of Alear, an ancient dragon who awakens after a millennium of slumber to face the Fell Dragon Sombron. This hero must unite the fractured nations of Elyos against the invading forces of Elusia and undead armies resurrected by the antagonist. The narrative follows Alear's journey to gather allies and reclaim the continent from the threat posed by the Fell Dragon and his followers.
Gameplay
The core experience retains the traditional turn-based tactical combat system where positioning, weapon triangles, and terrain play crucial roles. A unique mechanic called "Engage" allows players to bond their characters with Emblems, which are historical heroes from past Fire Emblem titles. By equipping these Emblems, units can access powerful Ring Skills and transform into the Emblem's form during battle, gaining unique abilities and stat boosts.
This system serves as both a gameplay tool and a nostalgic nod to the series' history. The game also features a Maddening difficulty mode, widely regarded by the community as one of the most challenging and well-designed in the franchise. Map design is frequently cited as a highlight, offering diverse and strategic environments that reward careful planning.
Story
Alear wakes up after a thousand years to find the world in chaos under the rule of the Fell Dragon Sombron. The protagonist must travel across Elyos to collect the Emblem Rings hidden throughout the land. Each ring contains the soul of a past hero, and bonding with them grants Alear and their allies immense power. The story focuses on gathering these allies to stop the invasion of Elusia and the resurrection of undead armies.
While praised for its strategic depth, some community feedback has noted that the plot and character writing are considered weaker compared to the gameplay mechanics. Some reviewers described the experience as middle of the road due to the contrast between excellent mechanics and weaker storytelling.
