Final Fantasy XII
"The Archadian Empire has annexed Dalmasca. A street thief and a deposed princess have other plans."
Overview
Final Fantasy XII reached the PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 16, 2006, with North American and European releases later that year. Square Enix developed and published it, and Hiroyuki Ito directed, with Akitoshi Kawazu producing and Yoichi Wada serving as executive producer. The game is the fourth entry set in Ivalice, following Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Tactics Advance, and it broke with the series' turn-based combat: enemies appear visibly on the field, battles run in real time with no random encounters or separate combat screen, and the camera is fully controllable.
Two systems define play. Gambits let players script party AI with conditional rules, such as healing any ally below 50 percent HP, so fights largely run themselves once configured. The License Board governs which weapons, armor, spells, and abilities each character may equip or cast. Hunts send the party after tougher monsters for rewards, and Chocobos and Moogles return within the new structure. Hitoshi Sakimoto composed the score with Masaharu Iwata and Hayato Matsuo, Akihiko Yoshida handled character designs, and Isamu Kamikokuryo led art direction.
By November 2009 the game had sold more than six million copies on PS2. A Nintendo DS sequel, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, arrived in 2007. The expanded International Zodiac Job System version, released in 2007, introduced a job system and later became the basis for the remaster Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which reached PlayStation 4 in July 2017, Windows in February 2018, and Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in April 2019. Square Enix marked the game's 20th anniversary on March 16, 2026, with new merchandise and a soundtrack live stream.
Gameplay
Combat in Final Fantasy XII happens on the same map players walk across, with no transition to a battle screen. Enemies are visible before engagement, and the party moves and attacks in real time, though the underlying calculations still run on timers and turn order hidden beneath the action. The gambit system is the game's most distinctive tool: players buy and assign conditional commands that the AI executes automatically, from attacking the nearest foe to curing status ailments to stealing from full-health enemies. A well-built gambit list can carry a party through most encounters without direct input, though the player can pause and issue orders at any time.
The License Board is a grid of tiles purchased with License Points earned in battle. Each tile unlocks a specific weapon class, armor type, spell, or ability, and characters can only use equipment and magic they have licensed. The original PS2 release gave every character the same board; the International Zodiac Job System version and The Zodiac Age divided it into twelve job-specific boards, so party members specialize rather than converge on identical builds. Hunts, posted at taverns, send players after named monsters that are considerably tougher than standard enemies, and they form a substantial side activity alongside the main quest. Chocobos serve as mounts and race participants, and Moogles appear throughout Ivalice as merchants, technicians, and quest givers.
Story
War between the Archadian Empire and Rozarria has ground on for years, and the small kingdom of Dalmasca sits between them. Archadia annexes Dalmasca, and Princess Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca goes into hiding and begins organizing resistance. Vaan, a young street thief in the occupied capital of Rabanastre, dreams of commanding his own airship as a sky pirate. His path crosses Ashelia's, and a band of allies gathers around them: Balthier, a sky pirate with his own reasons for opposing Archadia; Fran, his Viera partner; Basch, a disgraced knight; and Penelo, Vaan's friend from Rabanastre. The group works against Archadian rule while navigating the larger conflict between the two empires and the political machinations within Archadia's own court.
