Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
"The world beyond Midgar awaits."
Score
92.0/10
Overview
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth picks up right where Remake left off, sending Cloud Strife and the AVALANCHE crew on a globe-trotting mission to stop Shinra from draining the Planet's lifeblood and to put an end to Sephiroth's apocalyptic ambitions. This 2024 action role-playing game blends real-time combat with strategic depth, letting you swap between party members mid-fight, exploit enemy weaknesses, and unleash powerful synergy abilities. The open-world structure encourages exploration across sprawling regions like the Grasslands and Junon, filled with side quests, mini-games, and hidden secrets that flesh out the world beyond the main story.
Developed and published by Square Enix, Rebirth is the second entry in a planned trilogy reimagining the 1997 classic. It launched on PlayStation 5 in February 2024, with a Windows version following in January 2025, and ports to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S arriving in June 2026. Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, earning multiple Game of the Year nominations and wins. The concluding chapter, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is expected in 2027.
Gameplay
Rebirth's combat system is a refined take on the hybrid real-time/turn-based model from Remake. You control a party of three characters, freely switching between them during battle. Each character has a distinct playstyle: Cloud lands heavy broadsword combos, Tifa delivers rapid unarmed strikes, Barret provides ranged firepower, Aerith wields powerful magic, Red XIII fights with agile claw attacks, and Yuffie specializes in thrown weapons and ninjutsu. The new Synergy Abilities allow two characters to perform a combined attack once their shared gauge fills, adding a layer of tactical coordination. The Folios system replaces traditional skill trees, letting you unlock abilities and stat boosts by spending SP earned from leveling up and completing tasks. Exploration is fully open-world across six major regions, each packed with World Intel tasks like activating towers, scanning life springs, and completing combat challenges. Mini-games abound, including the card game Queen's Blood, chocobo racing, and a rhythm game at the Gold Saucer. Summon materia returns, allowing you to call iconic entities like Ifrit, Shiva, and Bahamut after earning their crystals through side content.
Story
Cloud and the team escape Midgar at the opening of Rebirth, immediately chasing Sephiroth across the Planet. Their journey takes them through familiar locations from the original game: the military fortress Junon, the amusement park Gold Saucer, the spiritual haven Cosmo Canyon, and Cloud's tragic hometown Nibelheim. Along the way, the story digs into Cloud's fragmented memories, revealing the truth about his past as a former Shinra soldier. Sephiroth's plan to use the Lifestream to cast Meteor becomes clearer, but new narrative elements introduced in Remake, the mysterious Whispers and alternate timeline implications, complicate the plot. Aerith's fate looms large; the game builds toward a climax that diverges significantly from the 1997 version, ending on a cliffhanger that sets up the final installment. The ending has sparked intense debate among fans, as it alters canon events in ways that some find bold and others find confusing.
