Fijación Oral, Vol. 1

Shakira followed her English-language breakthrough with a return to her roots on Fijación Oral, Vol. 1. The album, her sixth studio effort and fifth in Spanish, arrived on June 3, 2005 via Epic Records. Working with executive producer Rick Rubin and collaborators like Gustavo Cerati, Lester Mendez, Luis Fernando Ochoa, and Jose Torres, Shakira crafted a Latin rock sound that balanced introspective ballads with fiery pop. The 12-track set explores themes of love, obsession, and personal growth, showcasing her sharp songwriting and distinctive vocal style.

Critics praised the album for its artistic maturity, with a Metacritic score of 82. It debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 with 157,000 copies sold, a record for a Spanish-language album at the time. Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 topped charts in Argentina, Germany, Mexico, and Spain, and earned diamond certifications in Colombia and Mexico. By 2023, it had sold over 4 million copies worldwide.

At the 2006 Grammy Awards, it won Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. At the Latin Grammys, it took Album of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Album, making Shakira the first woman to win the top prize. The lead single La Tortura featuring Alejandro Sanz became a global hit, spending 25 weeks atop Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart. Follow-ups No (with Gustavo Cerati), Día de Enero, and Las de la Intuición also performed well on Latin charts. Shakira released an English companion album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2, later that year, and supported both with the Oral Fixation Tour spanning 2006–2007.[edit]
