"Powered by Football on the Next Generation of Consoles"
Score
7.5/10
Overview
Electronic Arts released the twenty-ninth installment of its football simulation franchise on October 1, 2021. The game served as a major technical bridge between console generations, introducing HyperMotion technology to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players. This new engine utilized motion capture data from real-life men's Champions League matches to create smoother player animations and more fluid movement. Previous generation consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One received a scaled-down version of these features.
Kylian Mbappé returned as the cover star for the second year in a row, continuing his role as the face of the "Powered by Football" campaign. The title featured over 17,000 players across more than 700 teams and thirty leagues, including full licenses for the UEFA Champions League. For the first time in the main series history, Career Mode and Kick-Off modes included women's club teams from the Women's Super League and other European competitions.
Critical reception highlighted the improved gameplay mechanics while noting persistent issues with monetization strategies. Reviewers praised the refined physics and goalkeeper AI on next-gen hardware but criticized the aggressive microtransactions within Ultimate Team. The game remained a commercial success throughout 2021 and maintained an active online community until its services were retired on November 4, 2024.
Gameplay
The core experience centered on HyperMotion technology for next-gen platforms, which captured 6v6 match data to drive realistic player movements and tactical behaviors. A complete rewrite of goalkeeper artificial intelligence allowed for more dynamic saves and better positioning logic during defensive plays. True Ball Physics updated how the ball reacted to surface conditions, improving passing accuracy and deflection realism especially in wet weather scenarios. Players could now utilize Explosive Sprint animations to burst into top speed more naturally when receiving the ball or making off-the-ball runs.
Attacking Tactics introduced a system where users could set custom instructions for teammates to control their positioning and pressing intensity during matches. The Nintendo Switch version operated as a Legacy Edition without access to HyperMotion or the major gameplay overhauls found on other systems. Cross-platform play supported matches between same-generation consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X but did not allow cross-gen interaction between older and newer hardware.
