Federal University of Goiás
Brazil"Public higher education at the heart of Brazil's Central-West"
About
The Federal University of Goiás (Universidade Federal de Goiás, UFG) is the only federally funded institution of higher education in the state of Goiás, the wealthiest and most populous state in Brazil's Central-West Region. Founded on December 14, 1960, the university consolidated several pre-existing colleges, including the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry, into a single public institution. Headquartered in the state capital, Goiânia, UFG now operates campuses in Catalão, City of Goiás, Jataí, Aparecida de Goiânia, and Cidade Ocidental, extending its academic reach across the state.
UFG serves over 35,000 students across 109 undergraduate courses, according to official figures, though some sources report lower numbers depending on counting methods. The university's research community is substantial: ResearchGate lists 9,753 affiliated researchers, and its output is tracked by the Nature Index, which monitors primary research articles in 178 applied, health, and natural science journals. This research strength is particularly evident in fields aligned with the region's economic priorities, such as agriculture, health sciences, and technology.
The institution's mission centers on public, tuition-free higher education, with a strong emphasis on research, teaching, and community engagement. UFG's regional importance is considerable; it is a key driver of development in Central-West Brazil, and its international collaborations, such as those with Harvard University through the Lemann Brazil Research Fund, underscore its growing global footprint.
Mission
UFG's mission is to provide free, high-quality public higher education and to generate knowledge that addresses regional and national challenges. The university prioritizes research in agriculture, health, and technology, and actively engages with local communities through extension programs. It aims to train professionals who are not only skilled but also socially responsible, contributing to the sustainable development of the Central-West region and beyond.
History
UFG was established on December 14, 1960, by federal law, merging five pre-existing colleges in Goiânia: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters. The university began operations in 1961 with these faculties, and its first rector was Coleman Natal e Silva, a former state governor.
During the 1960s and 1970s, UFG expanded its campus in Goiânia, building the Central Administration building and the Central Library, and adding new courses in nursing, agronomy, and veterinary medicine. In the 1980s, the university opened regional campuses in Catalão and Jataí to serve the interior of the state, followed by a campus in the City of Goiás in the 1990s.
The 2000s brought significant growth through the federal government's REUNI program, which expanded enrollment and created new programs. UFG also established a campus in Aparecida de Goiânia in 2008 and Cidade Ocidental in 2013. Today, UFG is a multi-campus institution with over 35,000 students and more than 9,000 researchers, making it a cornerstone of higher education in the Central-West.
