About
FC Twente, a club rooted in the eastern Netherlands, calls Enschede home. Born from a 1965 merger between Enschedese Boys and Sportclub Enschede, the latter having claimed the Dutch title in 1926, Twente has carved out a respectable place in Dutch football. Their trophy cabinet includes a single Eredivisie title, three KNVB Cups, and two Johan Cruyff Shields. Twente also reached the 1975 UEFA Cup final, where they fell to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Since 1998, the team has played at De Grolsch Veste, a stadium named after the local brewery. After a brief spell in the second tier, Twente returned to the Eredivisie in 2019 and have remained there. The club's identity is tied to the Twente region, the eastern part of Overijssel, giving it a distinct local flavor in a league dominated by clubs from the Randstad.
History
The merger that created FC Twente in 1965 brought together two local rivals with contrasting pedigrees. Sportclub Enschede had won the national championship in 1926, while Enschedese Boys had a more modest history. The new club quickly found its footing, reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1975, where they lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach. That run remains a milestone for the club and the region.
Twente's first major silverware came in 1977 with a KNVB Cup victory. The 2000s proved transformative: they won the cup again in 2001, and then the Eredivisie title in the 2009-10 season under Steve McClaren, finishing ahead of Ajax and PSV. Two Johan Cruyff Shields followed in 2010 and 2011, and a third cup in 2011. Financial troubles struck in the mid-2010s, leading to relegation in 2016, but the club bounced back and returned to the top flight in 2019.
In recent seasons, Twente have re-established themselves as a solid Eredivisie side, often competing for European spots. Their 2026-27 campaign includes a mix of results, like a 2-1 win over Heracles Almelo in the Twents Derby and a 1-0 opening-day loss to Heerenveen. They also advanced to the UEFA Conference League qualifiers in August 2026, joining Ajax in the qualification rounds after a defeat to Ferencvaros.
