FC Shakhtar Donetsk, a powerhouse of Ukrainian football, has a story as dramatic as any match it has played. Shakhtar Donetsk was founded on May 24, 1936, as the team of the Donbas coal miners, a working-class identity that has stuck ever since. During the Soviet era, the club won the Soviet Cup twice, in 1961 and 1962, but never captured the league title. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Shakhtar's fortunes changed dramatically. With investment from billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, the club became a domestic powerhouse, winning the Ukrainian Premier League multiple times and building a fierce rivalry with Dynamo Kyiv. The 2000s saw a wave of Brazilian talent arrive, including Fernandinho, Willian, and Douglas Costa, who were developed and then sold for large profits.

The 2009 UEFA Cup triumph over Werder Bremen in Istanbul was the high point. That same year, Shakhtar lost the UEFA Super Cup 1-0 to Barcelona.
