On September 13, 1933, a group of players in the Austrian town of Wals-Siezenheim founded SV Austria Salzburg. That club would grow into a local powerhouse until May 2005, when Red Bull GmbH purchased the license and assets. The new owners rebranded the entity as FC Red Bull Salzburg, instantly transforming it into a global hub for youth development. This shift created a unique dynamic in Austrian football where the modern team operates as a feeder system for the wider Red Bull network while competing alongside its spiritual successor, SV Austria Salzburg.

The club plays at the Red Bull Arena, a facility built specifically to host the new vision with a capacity of 30,188 seats. Since winning their first title under the new regime in the 2006–07 season, they have maintained an unbroken streak of dominance that has lasted nearly two decades. Their strategy relies on signing young talent from around the world, training them intensively, and selling them to top European leagues once they are ready.

This model has produced stars like Marc-André ter Stegen and David Alaba, who moved from the academy to international stardom. Despite some controversy among traditional fans regarding the corporate ownership, the team remains the standard-bearer for domestic success. Recent years have seen the squad become increasingly international. In the 2026–27 window, the roster features 31 players with an average age of just 22.8 years. Foreign nationals make up 77.4% of the squad, reflecting the global reach of their recruitment.
