Founded in 1881, FC Girondins de Bordeaux established itself as a cornerstone of French professional football. The club spent over a century dominating the domestic landscape, securing six Ligue 1 titles with their most recent championship coming in 2009. Their trophy cabinet also holds four Coupe de France victories, three Coupe de la League wins, and three Trophée des Champions. European campaigns saw them reach the UEFA Cup final in 1996 and the Latin Cup final in 1950.

The team played at the Stade Chaban-Delmas for decades before moving to the modern Stade Matmut Atlantique in 2015. This venue seats approximately 42,115 spectators. Despite a history rich in silverware, the organization faced severe financial mismanagement under owner Gérard Lopez starting in 2017. Financial instability accelerated under the tenure of Gérard Lopez, who purchased the club in 2017. By 2024, the administration failed to meet licensing requirements, leading to a drop to the Regional 1 division. Long-serving executive Arnaud De Carli departed in October 2026, citing his association with Lopez as a primary reason.
