About
On May 12, 1927, a group of sports enthusiasts in the capital of Ukraine founded FC Dynamo as part of the Soviet Dynamo Sports Society. The club has never faced relegation from the top flight since its first appearance in 1936, maintaining an unbroken presence in the highest tier of Soviet and later Ukrainian football. They play their home games at the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex, a massive venue that seats 70,050 spectators.
The team's identity is deeply intertwined with national pride. During the Soviet era, they stood as the primary challenger to Moscow-based clubs, turning matches against Spartak into symbolic struggles for Ukrainian autonomy. Valeriy Lobanovskyi defined this golden age through three separate tenures, transforming the squad into a tactical powerhouse that won 13 Soviet Top League titles and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups in 1975 and 1986.
After the dissolution of the USSR, Dynamo Kyiv continued its dominance by securing 17 Ukrainian Premier League championships. In 2000, France-Presse named them the Eastern European Club of the 20th Century. Their crest features three stars, each representing a decade of top-flight success. As of the 2026 season, the club remains a key competitor in the Ukrainian Premier League and regularly participates in UEFA competitions like the Europa League and Conference League.
History
The rivalry with Spartak Moscow intensified during the 1970s, becoming one of the most heated fixtures in Soviet football history. Fans viewed these encounters as a proxy war between Ukraine and Russia within the Soviet Union. This tension remains palpous today, as seen when Russian flags were displayed at a match against PAOK in Lublin in July 2026, sparking immediate controversy and protests.
Valeriy Lobanovskyi revolutionized the club's approach with his scientific method of training and tactics. His leadership brought unprecedented glory, including the 1975 victory over West Ham United in the Cup Winners' Cup final. The team also claimed the UEFA Super Cup in the same year, making them one of only two Soviet clubs to win a major UEFA trophy alongside Dinamo Tbilisi.
Mircea Lucescu served as head coach from 2016 to 2023, establishing himself as the longest-serving foreign manager in the club's history. He guided the team to multiple domestic doubles before handing over to Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, a former goalkeeper and club legend. Ihor Kostyuk took charge ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, continuing the tradition of strong managerial leadership.
