FC Dinamo București

Founded on June 13, 1948, FC Dinamo București emerged from the merger of Unirea Tricolor and Ciocanul under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This connection to state security forces shaped the club's identity, establishing it as a symbol of order within Romanian sports while earning the nickname "The Dogs" from supporters who chant "Câini până la moarte și dincolo de ea." The team has maintained a continuous presence in the top tier of Romanian football, missing only a single season from Liga I throughout its existence.

The club competes in Liga I, Romania's premier division, and boasts an illustrious trophy cabinet with 18 league titles and 13 domestic cups. On the international stage, Dinamo achieved its greatest success in the 1980s by reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup during the 1983–84 season and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1989–90. These achievements cemented the club's reputation as a formidable force in European competition during the Cold War era.

In 2010, the original entity faced insolvency and dissolution, leading to the formation of a new structure, SC Dinamo 1948 SA, which eventually reclaimed its place in the top flight. As of the 2025–26 season, the club continues to challenge for domestic honors while honoring its rich heritage. The club's origins trace back to June 1948 when Unirea Tricolor and Ciocanul merged under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This state-backed beginning provided immediate resources but also tied the team's fate to political shifts. For decades, Dinamo operated as a powerhouse, consistently challenging for domestic supremacy against their arch-rival Steaua București. The rivalry, known as the Bucharest Derby, represents a clash between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Army, creating one of the most intense derbies in Eastern Europe.

The 1980s marked a golden era for the club on the continental stage. Under the guidance of coaches like Mircea Lucescu, Dinamo reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1983–84, becoming the first Romanian team to achieve this feat. They followed this up with a Cup Winners' Cup semi-final appearance in 1989–90. These runs established the club as a serious contender in European football during the Cold War.

Financial difficulties struck in 2010 when the original ACS FC Dinamo București went into insolvency. The old club structure dissolved, and a new entity, SC Dinamo 1948 SA, was formed to preserve the legacy. The new team started in lower divisions before working its way back to Liga I.
