    Overview

Fate/stay night is a Japanese visual novel developed by Type-Moon, first released in 2004 and now regarded as one of the most influential works in its medium. Set in a modern Japanese city, it follows a teenager named Shirou Emiya who is drawn into the Holy Grail War, a secret tournament in which mages known as Masters summon legendary heroic spirits, called Servants, to battle one another for a wish-granting artifact. The story unfolds across three interlocking routes, each centered on a different heroine and exploring distinct themes, adversaries and emotional arcs, together forming a sprawling narrative about idealism, sacrifice and the cost of one's convictions. Originally an adult title for personal computers, the game was later re-released in all-ages versions and ported to numerous platforms, eventually receiving an internationally available remaster decades after its debut. Both critically and commercially successful, Fate/stay night launched the enormously popular Fate franchise, which has since expanded into anime adaptations, films, spin-off games and the hugely lucrative mobile title that brought the property worldwide fame. Its richly developed cast of historical and mythological figures reimagined as combatants became a cultural touchstone, and the original visual novel remains the foundational work from which one of Japan's biggest media franchises grew.

    Gameplay

Reading is the main activity here, with text and dialogue displayed over static backgrounds and character sprites. At key moments, the player makes choices that affect affection points with heroines and unlock different story routes. The game runs on a day-by-day calendar: you control Shirou during a two-week period, deciding where to go and whom to talk to. After a bad ending, a comedic tutorial segment called the Tiger Dojo appears, offering hints on how to avoid that outcome. The original PC release contained explicit sexual scenes, but all console and international versions removed them. The Steam version includes the fan disc Fate/hollow ataraxia as a bonus.

    Story

Shirou Emiya, a teenage boy living in Fuyuki City, accidentally summons the legendary King of Knights, Saber, and becomes a Master in the Holy Grail War. Six other mages and their Servants are also competing, each with their own wishes. The narrative splits into three routes. The Fate route focuses on Shirou's relationship with Saber and his ideal of becoming a hero of justice. Unlimited Blade Works pits him against Archer, a cynical version of his future self, and explores the nature of his magic. Heaven's Feel, the darkest route, reveals the Grail's true corruption and forces Shirou to choose between his ideals and saving one person, Sakura Matou. Each route builds on the previous, gradually exposing the war's hidden layers.
