Fate/Grand Order
"A mobile role-playing game where players restore history through the summoning of historical heroes."
Overview
Players assume the role of a Master at Chaldea, a secret organization tasked with preventing human extinction by correcting corrupted timelines. The narrative unfolds across seven Singularities and Lostbelts, requiring the player to recruit Servants, historical and mythological figures, to fight in turn-based battles. This free-to-play title launched on Android in Japan on July 30, 2015, followed by an iOS release later that August, eventually reaching English and Korean markets two years later.
The franchise has expanded well beyond its mobile origins into arcade hardware via Sega since 2018 and various anime adaptations. A major technical shift occurred recently as the development team prepared to migrate the game engine to Unity 6 in June 2026, aiming to enhance graphical fidelity and performance for the ongoing live service.
Gameplay
The core loop involves navigating a map to encounter events and engaging in turn-based combat where players select command cards for their party of three Servants. Battles rely on a speed stat system and a unique NP Gauge mechanic that fills up during attacks to unleash powerful Noble Phantasms. Players gather resources like Saint Quartz to summon new characters through a gacha system, managing a roster to overcome specific enemy classes.
While the game lacks direct player-versus-player modes, it features asynchronous cooperative content such as Quests and Mystery Dungeons. These raid-like challenges allow groups to tackle difficult PvE scenarios together without real-time interaction, focusing on strategy and resource management rather than competitive ranking.
Story
The plot centers on the Grand Order mission to prevent the end of humanity caused by timeline corruption. Protagonists travel through distorted points in time known as Singularities to correct anomalies before they lead to the extinction of the species. The main narrative arc concludes with the Final Singularity confrontation against Solomon, the King of Magic, resolving the initial threat to the Human Order.
Subsequent chapters explore the Lostbelt concept, introducing alternate timelines where humanity failed to evolve. Recent developments in late 2026 include the unveiling of the 11th-anniversary animation and the Chronicles of an Eternal Nostalgic Journey, which suggests ongoing narrative expansion or retrospective content exploring the franchise's history.
