    Overview

A routine business trip to New York City turns into a nightmare for Dan Gallagher when a brief affair with a freelance writer spirals out of control. What starts as a single evening of indiscretion evolves into a terrifying campaign of harassment that threatens his marriage and his children's safety. This psychological thriller captures the fragility of domestic life when pushed to its breaking point.

Released in September 1987, the film arrived at a moment when audiences were hungry for stories that exposed the dark underbelly of suburban perfection. Director Adrian Lyne crafted a narrative that felt uncomfortably close to home, transforming a standard infidelity plot into a high-stakes battle for survival. The movie did not rely on supernatural elements or external monsters; instead, it weaponized the familiar setting of a family home against itself.

Dan Gallagher is a successful corporate lawyer living in New York City with his wife Beth and their young daughter Ellen. While on a business trip, Dan checks into a hotel where he meets Alex Forrest, a freelance writer who works for his firm. Their initial interaction involves witty banter and shared professional interests before they engage in a passionate one-night stand. The morning after, Dan immediately ends the encounter, emphasizing his commitment to his family and refusing to see her again. He returns to his life believing the incident was a singular mistake that will never be repeated.

Alex does not accept this rejection. She begins by attempting to contact Dan through polite phone calls and notes, but her behavior quickly shifts into something far more sinister. She appears uninvited at his office and waits outside his home. As Dan tries to distance himself by altering his schedule and avoiding her, her obsession deepens into a terrifying campaign of harassment. She vandalizes his property and breaks into his house while the family is away, leaving disturbing gifts including a dead rabbit with its head cut off, a symbolic act designed to terrify Beth.

The psychological toll on the Gallagher family becomes immense. Beth, initially skeptical of her husband's account, begins to notice the strange occurrences and the strain on Dan's demeanor. The situation spirals out of control as Alex becomes increasingly unstable, threatening the safety of the children and the integrity of the marriage. Dan realizes that ignoring Alex or relying on the police yields no results due to a lack of concrete evidence. The tension mounts as Alex targets Dan's colleagues and friends, attempting to isolate him further. The film builds a claustrophobic atmosphere within the Gallagher home, turning what was once a sanctuary into a prison. As Alex's desperation grows, so does the threat to the family's lives, forcing Dan to confront the reality that his single moment of indiscretion has unleashed a predator who will stop at nothing to possess him.
