Far Cry

The Far Cry brand emerged in March 2004 when German studio Crytek released the original game to demonstrate their proprietary CryEngine technology. Ubisoft acquired the intellectual property rights later that same year, shifting development of subsequent titles to its Montreal studio. To better suit the franchise's needs for vast, dynamic landscapes, Ubisoft Montreal developed the Dunia engine, which became the technical backbone for the series until the return to CryEngine for Far Cry Primal and beyond.

As of 2025, the brand has expanded into six mainline entries: Far Cry, Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, and Far Cry 6. The franchise operates as an anthology; while it shares a consistent gameplay formula involving lone protagonists battling charismatic tyrants in isolated locations, each installment features a standalone narrative with no shared characters or continuity.

Recent developments indicate significant expansion beyond gaming into television. As of September 17, 2026, FX announced a new Far Cry TV series produced by Noah Hawley, the creator of Alien: Earth. This upcoming anthology series will adapt the franchise's episodic nature, casting major talent including Brendan Gleeson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hamish Linklater, Sam Spruell, and Jamie Demetriou.
