    "Build. Automate. Escape."

2016 Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 Wube Software
    Community

    Overview

Factorio drops you onto an alien planet as an engineer with nothing but a pickaxe and a vision. The goal is simple: build a rocket and escape. But the path there is anything but simple. You'll mine ore, smelt it into plates, and assemble increasingly complex machines, all while automating every step of the process. The game's real hook is watching your hand-crafted mining outposts grow into sprawling, humming factories that stretch across the map. It's a construction and management sim that rewards careful planning and punishes inefficiency, with hostile alien lifeforms adding a layer of tension. You can play alone or with friends in multiplayer, and there are eight extra scenarios beyond the main campaign.

Developed by Czech studio Wube Software, Factorio launched into early access on 25 February 2016, before its full release on Windows, macOS, and Linux on 14 August 2020. The game later made its way to Nintendo Switch on 28 October 2022, and a Switch 2 port followed on 22 December 2025. The core game is often praised for its depth and optimization puzzles, earning a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam. A paid expansion, Space Age, arrived on 21 October 2024, adding four new planets and extending the endgame. In June 2026, Wube announced that update 2.1 would be the final major content drop, but the modding community keeps the game alive with endless possibilities.

    Gameplay

At its heart, Factorio is about automation. You start with a pickaxe, mining coal and iron by hand, but the magic happens when you build assemblers, inserters, and belts to do the work for you. The core loop is deceptively simple: mine resources, smelt them into plates, and feed them into a production chain that spits out science packs. Those packs unlock new technologies, which in turn let you build faster machines, trains, and even robots. The real challenge is scaling up without choking your supply lines. A well-designed factory hums along with minimal intervention, but a poorly planned one bottlenecks in frustrating ways. The game throws biters at you if you pollute too much, so you have to balance expansion with defense. You can also hop into multiplayer and share the load with friends, each of you tackling different parts of the production chain. The game's optimization is legendary; it can handle thousands of entities without a stutter, thanks to its custom engine written in C++ and Lua. The modding API is incredibly robust, letting players craft everything from new ores to entire overhauls like Bob's and Angel's mods.

    Story

The premise is minimal: your spaceship crashes on an alien world, and you must build a rocket to escape. There's no dialogue, no cutscenes, just you and the environment. The real narrative emerges from your actions. You start by punching trees and mining coal, then gradually industrialize the planet. The biters, native creatures, see your pollution as a threat and attack, forcing you to build walls and turrets. The endgame is launching a rocket, but reaching that point is a journey of thousands of small decisions. The Space Age expansion expands the story by letting you travel to other planets in the solar system, each with its own resources and challenges. For instance, Vulcanus is a volcanic world with massive ore deposits, while Fulgora is covered in lightning storms and ruins. This adds a whole new layer of logistics, as you have to manage interplanetary shipments. The story is what you make of it, but the sense of progression is deeply satisfying.
