    About This Album

Phil Collins walked away from Genesis in early 1980 to confront the collapse of his marriage to Andrea Bertorelli. He channeled that raw heartbreak into Face Value, a solo debut that stripped back the progressive rock grandeur for intimate pop rock. The sessions took place between mid-1980 and early 1981, where Collins worked closely with engineer Hugh Padgham to craft a sound defined by punchy drums and stark emotional delivery.

Released on February 9, 1981, through Virgin Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in North America, the album features twelve tracks including hits like In the Air Tonight and Here I Go Again. Collaborators such as Eric Clapton added guitar work while the Phenix Horns provided brass arrangements. Critics immediately noted the honesty in the lyrics, which detailed personal pain without filter.

The record climbed to number one on the UK Albums Chart for three weeks and peaked at number seven on the US Billboard 200. It eventually sold over five million copies in the United States alone, earning multi-platinum status. Recent celebrations mark the 45th anniversary with a new box set titled Face Value (Full Value) arriving September 18, 2026. This release includes remastered audio mixes by Steven Wilson and previously unreleased material like a cover of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows.
