Expelled from Paradise

In the year 2400, the remnants of humanity live within DEVA, a vast orbital data network that offers a perfect, painless digital existence. When a hacker known as Frontier Setter broadcasts a challenge from the ruined Earth below, DEVA sends security officer Angela Balzac down in a synthetic body to investigate. She teams with Dingo, a cynical wasteland survivor who chose to remain on the physical planet. Directed by Seiji Mizushima and written by Gen Urobuchi, this CGI-animated feature from Toei Animation and Graphinica pits digital utopia against gritty reality.

The film explores the tension between a simulated paradise and the flawed, tangible world. Angela, voiced by Rie Kugimiya, experiences physical sensations for the first time, while Dingo, voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki, embodies the stubborn value of real experience. Their hunt for Frontier Setter leads through ruined cities and across deserts inhabited by giant sandworms, with mecha battles punctuating the philosophical journey.[edit]

Angela Balzac exists as pure data within DEVA, a perfect digital realm where humanity escaped Earth's ecological collapse. When the council detects an intrusion from the surface, they dispatch her in a specially designed synthetic body called an Arhan. She descends to the post-apocalyptic Earth and meets Dingo, a diver who never uploaded his consciousness. Dingo works as a local agent for DEVA, but he holds no love for the digital world he sees as a lie.

Their target is Frontier Setter, a hacker broadcasting signals that tempt DEVA citizens to abandon the network and return to physical bodies. Angela and Dingo track him across barren wastelands and through the ruins of old cities. Along the way, Angela struggles with her new physical form: exhaustion, pain, hunger, but also the feel of wind and the taste of food. Dingo, initially dismissive of the data doll, begins to respect her resilience.

The pursuit brings them to a hidden base where Frontier Setter reveals his agenda. He has been creating synthetic bodies for any DEVA resident who wishes to leave the digital paradise. Angela faces a crisis of loyalty: her duty to DEVA versus her growing appreciation for the imperfect, tangible world.
