Everytime You Go Away

Daryl Hall penned "Everytime You Go Away" for his duo with John Oates, appearing on their 1980 studio album Voices. Columbia Records released the track as a deep cut that received little commercial attention at the time. The song remained obscure until English singer Paul Young recorded a cover version four years later.

Young's rendition appeared on his third album The Secret of Association, which arrived in February 1985. Producers Simon Napier-Bell and the team known as Jolley & Swain shaped the track into a lush soft rock ballad featuring a slower tempo and emotional vocal delivery. This version transformed the composition into a global hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in June 1985.

The track resurfaced in October 2025 when Cynthia Erivo released a stripped-back acoustic arrangement for the documentary film John Candy: I Like Me. Released via Verve & Republic Records, her performance highlighted the lyrics during an emotional scene about the late comedian's legacy.
